Hollywood rolls out red carpet for Olympic flame<\/strong><\/p>\n

LOS ANGELES <\/b>(AFP) – Hollywood <\/b>rolled out the red carpet for the Olympic flame<\/b> as actor Sylvester Stallone <\/b>launched the Los Angeles<\/b> leg of the torch relay that will end at the Athens Olympics<\/b> opening ceremony.<\/span><\/p>\n

Under overcast skies, Los Angeles Mayor Jim Hahn<\/b> ignited the torch from the Olympic flame<\/b> that arrived overnight from Mexico<\/b>. <\/span><\/p>\n

The flame had been carried through the streets of Mexico City<\/b> on Tuesday<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Hahn <\/b>handed off to Stallone<\/b>, who jogged through a boistrous crowd, many carrying blue balloons, at Los Angeles’ Venice Beach<\/b>.<\/p>\n

In all, 140 Angelenos<\/b> were carry the torch throughout Los Angeles<\/b> – the first of four US<\/b> cities that will participate in the relay. From Los Angeles<\/b> the flame will head to St. Louis, Missouri,<\/b> then to the site of the 1996 Summer Games<\/b> – Atlanta, Georgia<\/b> – and New York<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Stallone<\/b> was not the only celebrity taking part in the celebrations.<\/p>\n

Shortly before 7pm, actor Tom Cruise<\/b> was to carry the torch into Dodger Stadium<\/b>, then hand the flame to World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko<\/b>, who was to pass it on to four-time Olympic swimming<\/b> gold medallist Janet Evans<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Evans<\/b> was to turn it over to Olympic track and field gold medalist Rafer Johnson<\/b>, who will light the ceremonial cauldron before the start of the Dodgers<\/b> baseball game against Baltimore<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Johnson<\/b>, 69, won the gold in the decathlon<\/b> at the 1960 Olympics<\/b> in Rome <\/b>and was part of the torch relay at the 1996 Olympics<\/b> in Atlanta <\/b>and the final torchbearer for the 1984 Olympics<\/b> in Los Angeles<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Johnson<\/b>, Hahn <\/b>and International Olympic Committee<\/b> member Anita DeFrantz <\/b>were scheduled to speak.<\/p>\n

But before that, the torch had to wind its way through Los Angeles<\/b>, carried not only by celebrities but also by local “heroes” selected for their contributions to their communities.<\/p>\n

“We have three great sites, it’s moving from the west to the east,” relay spokesman Tim Lebercht<\/b> said. “We’re going to the LA City Hall<\/b> to the Coliseum<\/b>, we’re going to be on Hollywood Boulevard<\/b>, and we also have a strong involvement of the Greek<\/b> community here greeting the flame coming from Athens<\/b>.”<\/p>\n

Comedian Ellen DeGeneres<\/b> predicted being an Olympic<\/b> torchbearer would be “a real thrill,” while Cruise <\/b>called it an honor.<\/p>\n

“The Olympic Games <\/b>are a vital and much needed activity to support and bolster international goodwill and cooperation, and I am proud to do what I can to help,” he said.<\/p>\n

The flame’s 46,800-mile (75,317-km) journey began June 4. It passed through Africa<\/b> and South America<\/b> for the first time. The relay will make a final trip around Greece<\/b> before arriving in Athens<\/b> for the opening ceremony August 13.<\/p>\n
