Escape to Victory thrashes rivals [from Ananova.com<\/a>, June 20, 2004]<\/span><\/p>\n

Escape to Victory<\/b> has been named the greatest football movie of all time.<\/p>\n

The 1981<\/b> film starred Brazilian<\/b> football legend Pele<\/b>, England<\/b>‘s 1966 World Cup<\/b> captain Bobby Moore<\/b> and actors Michael Caine <\/b>and Sylvester Stallone<\/b>.<\/p>\n

They played allied PoW<\/b>s preparing for a match against a German<\/b> team in Nazi<\/b>-occupied Paris<\/b> while French Resistance<\/b> and British<\/b> officers make plans for the team’s escape.<\/p>\n

British <\/b>comedy Bend it Like Beckham<\/b>, starring Parminder Nagra<\/b> and Keira Knightley<\/b>, came second in the poll.<\/p>\n

The most recent soccer movie Football Factory<\/b>, about football hooliganism, which was criticised for scenes of explicit violence, came 10th<\/b> in the UCI Cinema poll<\/b> with only 1%.<\/p>\n

Fever Pitch<\/b>, based on Nick Hornby<\/b>‘s best selling semi-autobiography, came third<\/b>, followed by When Saturday Comes<\/b>, the 1996 <\/b>movie starring Sean Bean<\/b> and Emily Lloyd<\/b>, about a hard-drinking brewery worker who has a trial at Sheffield United<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Other films in the top 10<\/b> include Cup Fever<\/b> (1965), in sixth <\/b>place, starring Manchester United<\/b> manager Matt Busby<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Mean Machine<\/b> (2001), which starred Vinnie Jones<\/b> as a soccer star who leads a match against prison guards after being jailed for assault, came ninth<\/b>.<\/p>\n

UCI Cinemas<\/b> spokeswoman Lianne Butterfield<\/b> said: “As a nation we love football and films about our favourite passion have always been popular with cinemagoers.<\/p>\n

“Escape to Victory <\/b>and Bend it Like Beckham<\/b> are great feel-good films that everyone can enjoy, even if they don’t understand the offside rule.”<\/span><\/p>\n
