On July 26, 2006<\/strong>, Michael Katz<\/strong> posted an article at thesweetscience.com<\/strong><\/a> titled “Yo, Adrian, Let’s Hail the Spirit of ’76”<\/strong> which explores the factors that led to a boxing “Renaissance of the Eighties.”<\/strong> The great fighters that came out of the 1976 Olympics<\/strong> played a major role, but Katz<\/strong> also credits “Rocky.”<\/strong> Here’s what he had to say:<\/p>\n

There was another major factor in producing the Eighties\u2019 ring revival. \u201cThe \u2018Rocky\u2019 <\/strong>movie,\u201d said [Boxing Promoter Bob<\/strong>] Arum<\/strong>.Sylvester Stallone<\/strong>\u2019s film, based on so many real boxing nuggets \u2013 Rocky Balboa<\/strong>, like Joe Frazier<\/strong>, hitting the sides of beef; the instruction to the corner to \u201ccut me,\u201d when he couldn\u2019t see out of a swollen eye \u2013 captured the public imagination. It was more real than the reality series, \u201cThe Contender,\u201d <\/strong>which Stallone<\/strong> would attempt many years later.\u201cIn the movie,\u201d said Arum<\/strong>, \u201che had more control \u2013 he was the writer and the director.\u201dThe Spirit of \u201976<\/strong> remains with us. There\u2019s another \u201cRocky\u201d<\/strong> movie due this year, but more apropos, if one forgets about the heavyweights, the talent level is extraordinarily high in the real thing.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
