With the 2010 Oscar winners <\/strong>almost ready to be announced, Tom Chivers<\/strong> was inspired to come up with his list of “The Ten Worst Injustices in Academy Award History.”<\/strong><\/a> Coming in at #4 <\/strong>was Rocky<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 Here’s what Mr. Chivers<\/strong> had to say:<\/p>\n

4. <\/strong>Rocky, written by and starring Sylvester Stallone(above), is actually an underrated film. It isn\u2019t helped by its endless sequels (we forget whether it\u2019s Rocky IV or Rocky V that has the robot butler, and the bit at the end of IV where Rocky\u2019s incoherent post-fight rambling seems to bring about the end of the Cold War is particularly ludicrous), but it\u2019s touching, unpretentious fare, and Stallone does well in the role he built for himself. Still, it\u2019s a bit of a stretch that it beat Scorsese\u2019s Taxi Driver to the 1976 Oscar for Best Picture. <\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

While I think it’s great that Mr. Chivers<\/strong> believes that Rocky<\/strong><\/em> is underrated, I’m surprised that he thinks it’s a “bit of a stretch” that Rocky<\/strong><\/em> beat Taxi Driver<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 I think the real injustice for Rocky<\/strong><\/em> is that Sly <\/strong>didn’t win the Academy Award<\/strong> for Best Actor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Mr. Chivers<\/strong> also says that Rocky<\/strong><\/em> wasn’t helped by it’s endless sequels.\u00a0 Perhaps he forgot that Rocky<\/strong><\/em> was judged on it’s own merits.\u00a0 At the time of the 1976 Oscars<\/strong>, there had been no sequels.\u00a0 And while it’s clear that Mr. Chivers<\/strong> may have been confused [Rocky IV<\/strong><\/em> has the robot not V<\/strong>] or allowed his opinion of Rocky<\/strong><\/em> to drop due to the sequels, the Oscar<\/strong> judges didn’t have to face that problem.<\/p>\n

It’s interesting that if you take out Mr. Chivers<\/strong> references to the sequels you end up with:<\/p>\n
