{"id":3351,"date":"2011-01-30T10:32:26","date_gmt":"2011-01-30T14:32:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/wordpress\/?p=3351"},"modified":"2011-01-30T10:32:26","modified_gmt":"2011-01-30T14:32:26","slug":"brian-tyler-rambo-the-expendables","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stallonezone.com\/wordpress\/2011\/01\/30\/brian-tyler-rambo-the-expendables\/","title":{"rendered":"Brian Tyler: &#8220;Rambo&#8221; &#038; &#8220;The Expendables&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><\/strong><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/stallonezone.com\/imgs\/news\/2011\/jan\/013011sly_btyler.png?resize=475%2C403\" alt=\"\" width=\"475\" height=\"403\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.moviehole.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Moviehole<\/a><\/strong> recently interviewed <strong>Brian Tyler<\/strong> [pictured above with <strong>Sly<\/strong>], the composer behind the scores for <strong><em>&#8220;Rambo&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>&#8220;The Expendables.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0<strong>Tyler<\/strong> is currently\u00a0composing music for\u00a0<strong><em>&#8220;Fast Five&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>&#8220;Battle for LA&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> but took time out for the interview.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s what he had to say about working with <strong>Sly<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Jonathon Urban:<\/strong> After a 20 year absence, Sylvester Stallone brought back one of his two iconic characters, John Rambo, in 2008\u2019s \u201cRambo.\u201d For over 25 years, Jerry Goldsmith\u2019s name was synonymous with the epic scores for \u201cFirst Blood\u201d, \u201cRambo: First Blood Part II\u201d and \u201cRambo III.\u201d What was it like stepping into such a beloved franchise that also had such a well-known score?\n<p><strong>BT: <\/strong>Daunting! I wanted to honor the Jerry Goldsmith scores and incorporate those great themes into my overall tapestry which had new themes as well. Rambo is now older and wiser and that evolution needed to be reflected in the score.<\/p>\n<p><strong>JU: <\/strong>There\u2019s clearly a \u201chero theme\u201d and not per se a \u201clove theme,\u201d but one that is clearly for the character of \u2018Sarah.\u2019 How did you come up with these?<\/p>\n<p><strong>BT: <\/strong>Well the themes for \u201cRambo\u201d took awhile to come up with. Hmm. I think I sat down at the piano and just went for it!<\/p>\n<p><strong>JU: <\/strong>There are several classic Goldsmith cues that meld very nicely with your original work. Was there ever any challenge on working in the Goldsmith cues into your original pieces?<\/p>\n<p><strong>BT: <\/strong>Well I wrote my themes to be compatible with Jerry\u2019s themes. They worked together by design. My biggest challenge was composing next to a giant\u2019s shadow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>JU:<\/strong> And like you have done with several other directors, you scored your second film with Stallone, \u201cThe Expendables.\u201d Before I ask you about \u201cThe Expendables\u201d, it has to be a good feeling working again with a director you have worked with before. Do you feel that you and the director\u2019s chemistry gets better with each film and that you\u2019re able to compose a score that encompasses the director\u2019s vision even more so?<\/p>\n<p><strong>BT: <\/strong>There are a number of directors that I have worked with a number of times. Bill Paxton, Sylvester Stallone, Jonathan Liebesman, William Friedkin, Justin Lin, George Gallo, Greg Yaitanes, and others. It is always great to grow closer with a creative collaborator.<\/p>\n<p><strong>JU: <\/strong>Okay, \u201cThe Expendables\u201d, which was the macho movie of all macho movies. Were you Sly\u2019s first choice to score the movie?<\/p>\n<p><strong>BT: <\/strong>I was indeed. At least I was told that.
