{"id":3841,"date":"2011-09-04T09:38:01","date_gmt":"2011-09-04T13:38:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/wordpress\/?p=3841"},"modified":"2011-09-04T09:38:01","modified_gmt":"2011-09-04T13:38:01","slug":"a-detailed-look-back-at-judge-dredd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stallonezone.com\/wordpress\/2011\/09\/04\/a-detailed-look-back-at-judge-dredd\/","title":{"rendered":"A Detailed Look Back at Judge Dredd"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><\/strong><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/stallonezone.com\/imgs\/news\/2011\/aug\/083111judge_dredd.png?resize=475%2C310\" alt=\"\" width=\"475\" height=\"310\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On <strong>August 31, 2011<\/strong>, <strong>Phil Beresford<\/strong> at <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.denofgeek.com\/movies\/1036158\/looking_back_at_judge_dredd.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Den of Geek<\/span><\/a><\/strong> takes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.denofgeek.com\/movies\/1036158\/looking_back_at_judge_dredd.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>a detailed look back at<\/strong> <strong><em>Judge Dredd<\/em><\/strong> <\/span><\/a>starring <strong>Sylvester Stallone<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 Here are a couple of tidbits&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span id=\"bodycontents\" class=\"bodycontents\">Since its release in 1995, the intervening sixteen years have not been kind to <em>Judge Dredd,<\/em> although the cause of its failings run much deeper than any issues to do with headgear, casting, or how Judges should or should not behave.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"bodycontents\"><span id=\"bodycontents\" class=\"bodycontents\">Its failure, both commercially and critically, is something that still seems to rankle with its star, Sylvester Stallone, who has always looked back at the movie as a wasted opportunity. Speaking at a press conference to promote <em>Rambo<\/em> in 2008, Stallone said \u201cThe biggest mistake I ever made was with the sloppy handling of <em>Judge Dredd<\/em>\u201d. It\u2019s an interesting statement, revealing more than is apparent at first glance about what went wrong with the film.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"bodycontents\"><span class=\"bodycontents\"><span id=\"bodycontents\" class=\"bodycontents\">For all the problems that were later revealed to have existed off screen, the opening fifteen minutes of the film serve as a perfectly realised introduction to Dredd, the Judges, and the chaos of the nightmare city where they strive to maintain order.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"bodycontents\"><span class=\"bodycontents\"><span class=\"bodycontents\"><span id=\"bodycontents\" class=\"bodycontents\">Delivering the line \u201cI am<em> the law!\u201d <\/em>while working the Joe Dredd chin in a most pleasing fashion, he then grimly sets about bringing the trouble makers to justice with a mixture of severe sentencing and instant executions, before condemning a distraught and disbelieving Fergee to five more years in prison for interfering with city property (the cleaning droid).<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s exactly the sort of thing that would appear as a one-off story in the <em>2000AD<\/em> strip, told over six to eight pages and concluding with the perfect punch line, as Dredd sentences a man fresh out of jail to another stint inside, simply for saving his own life. In addition, Dredd is the hard-hearted, implacable bastard we all know and love, Mega-City One has been introduced (and quite frankly looks incredible), and we\u2019ve been given a crash course in how the Judge system is used to implement justice. Plus, we seem to have got rid of Rob Schneider early as well. All in all, it\u2019s a very pleasing opening.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"bodycontents\"><span class=\"bodycontents\"><span class=\"bodycontents\"><span class=\"bodycontents\">Sly: &#8220;&#8230; <span id=\"bodycontents\" class=\"bodycontents\">the whole project was troubled from the beginning. The philosophy of the film was not set in stone \u2013 by that I mean, \u2018Is this going to be a serious drama or with comic overtones\u2019, like other science fiction films that were successful? So a lotta pieces just didn\u2019t fit smoothly. It was sort of like a feathered fish.
