He has received <strong>numerous awards<\/strong> including the <strong>Lifetime Achievement Award of the Arthur C.        Clarke Foundation<\/strong>, the <strong>John W.        Campbell Memorial Award <\/strong>and  the<strong> Robert A. Heinlein Award<\/strong> just to name a few.  <strong>Dr. Bova<\/strong> is the <strong>President Emeritus of the        National Space Society<\/strong> and a<strong> past president<\/strong> of <strong>Science Fiction Writers of        America<\/strong>.  He is also a huge fan of the movie, <em><strong>Rocky<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On <strong>October 9, 2011<\/strong>, <strong>The Naples News<\/strong> posted a piece by <strong>Dr. Bova<\/strong> titled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naplesnews.com\/news\/2011\/oct\/09\/ben-bova-oct-9-2011-rocky-reminds-us-we-can-be-con\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>&#8220;Rocky Reminds Us We Can Be Contenders.&#8221; <\/strong><\/span><\/a> Here are some tidbits&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I saw the movie \u201cRocky\u201d again on television a few nights ago. And, as usual, got a lump in my throat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cRocky\u201d holds a special place in my heart.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>And as a writer, I have to admire the script that Sylvester Stallone put  together for \u201cRocky.\u201d Think about it: The movie is filled with conflict  and suspense, yet there is no villain, no bad guy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>One of the secrets of writing fiction is to avoid the clich\u00e9s. Stallone  did this admirably in \u201cRocky.\u201d It would have been easy to scribble out  just another fight movie, but Stallone steered his way past the clich\u00e9s  and wrote what I consider to be a masterpiece.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Ben Bova has written more than 120 novels and nonfiction books.
