“Rocky”<\/span> soon followed. <\/span>Young<\/span> had worked with the original’s producers, I<\/span>rwin Winkler<\/span> and <\/span>Robert Chartoff<\/span>, which led to <\/span>Stallone<\/span> selecting the plucky <\/span>Young<\/span> to play the character – <\/span>Paulie<\/span> was <\/span>Rocky’s<\/span> cinematic brother-in-law – that would span all six <\/span>“Rockys.”<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n


<\/span><\/p>\n

“I’m not <\/span>Paulie<\/span>,” said <\/span>Young<\/span>, “but there’s a part of <\/span>Paulie<\/span> in all of us … cowardice, bravado, false bravado. And I knew how to beat the drum to make the guy interesting and ugly and pathetic.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Young<\/span> initially balked at the invitation to do the first sequel – “I didn’t want to be part of an ensemble,” he said – but eventually agreed. “It wasn’t the money,” he says. “It don’t mean that much to me, I find a way to get by, and I find a way to blow it.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Will he see the new <\/span>“Rambo”<\/span> with <\/span>Stallone<\/span> when it opens <\/span>Jan. 25<\/span>?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“You know,” he said, and this is why you have to love <\/span>Burt Young<\/span>, “I’ve never seen a <\/span>‘Rambo.’<\/span>“<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Burt Young<\/span> on <\/span>Paulie, Rocky,<\/span> and<\/span> Sly<\/span>:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“I first met <\/span>Stallone<\/span>, I was in the studio commissary, he comes to my table, he says, ‘<\/span>Mr. Young<\/span>, I’m <\/span>Sylvester Stallone<\/span>, I wrote <\/span>“Rocky.”<\/span> You gotta do a part, you gotta do a part.’<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“I says, ‘Shush, whaddaya doin’? Let me twist their arms [the producers] a little bit, lemme make a buck.’ And he lit up. Turns out I was the highest-paid actor in the first one.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“<\/span>Stallone<\/span> wrote exquisitely; he wrote street prose. I think he saw me when he wrote it. Like <\/span>Arthur Miller<\/span>, he’d cut the commas off. You’d say, hey, he saying somethin’ without the commas.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“Seventeen years after <\/span>‘Rocky V,’<\/span> we came back [for <\/span>‘Rocky Balboa’<\/span>], and it was pretty sentimental for me. <\/span>Stallone<\/span> was […] <\/span>Michelangelo<\/span> painting the chapel. He wouldn’t let anything alone. He was a force. It was touching.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
