{"id":5737,"date":"2013-03-10T09:25:33","date_gmt":"2013-03-10T13:25:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/wordpress\/?p=5737"},"modified":"2013-03-10T09:25:33","modified_gmt":"2013-03-10T13:25:33","slug":"mike-kunda-meets-chuck-wepner-sounds-like-a-monster-movie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stallonezone.com\/wordpress\/2013\/03\/10\/mike-kunda-meets-chuck-wepner-sounds-like-a-monster-movie\/","title":{"rendered":"Mike Kunda Meets Chuck Wepner &#8211; Sounds like a Monster Movie!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/stallonezone.com\/imgs\/news\/2013\/mar\/031013mkunda_wepner3.png?resize=500%2C375\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Recently, <strong>SZoner<\/strong>, <strong>Mike Kunda<\/strong> had an extended visit and great meal with <strong>Chuck Wepner<\/strong>.\u00a0 <strong>Wepner vs Ali<\/strong> was, of course, the fight that gave <strong>Sly<\/strong> the spark of inspiration that led to <em><strong>Rocky<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s how <strong>Mike<\/strong> describes the evening&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Craig,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Thought\u00a0 I&#8217;d share a <em><strong>Rocky<\/strong><\/em> related story with the <strong>StalloneZone<\/strong>. This past <strong>July<\/strong>, I had a gig in <strong>Philly<\/strong> as <strong>&#8220;Rocky&#8221;<\/strong> helping a young lady with cerebral palsy achieve a check on her bucket list &#8211;\u00a0to climb the <em><strong>Rocky<\/strong><\/em> steps. <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/-rEVdAMoFZA\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">http:\/\/youtu.be\/-rEVdAMoFZA<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 The featured celebrity guest was <strong>Mr. Chuck Wepner<\/strong>, who went fifteen rounds with <strong>Muhammad Ali<\/strong>, providing the catalyst for a less than broke <strong>Sylvester Stallone<\/strong> to write <em><strong>Rocky<\/strong><\/em> and had a charity match with <strong>Andre The Giant<\/strong>. Well,<strong> Chuck<\/strong> and I hit it off, talking about a great many things. This began a series of phone calls at all hours, discussing life, <strong>Chuck&#8217;s<\/strong> amazing journey and of course, <strong>Sly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/stallonezone.com\/imgs\/news\/2013\/mar\/031013mkunda_wepner.png?resize=500%2C282\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" \/><br \/>\nRecently, <strong>Chuck<\/strong> and I and our family&#8217;s gathered at <strong>The Victors<\/strong> (<strong>Adrian&#8217;s<\/strong>) in <strong>Philadelphia<\/strong> for nearly six hours of great food, red wine and amazing opera. We drifted from topic to topic. I patiently waited to hear two stories &#8211; <strong>15 rounds with Ali<\/strong> and fighting <strong>Andre The Giant<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I asked him who hit hardest, <strong>Ali, Foreman<\/strong> or <strong>Liston<\/strong>. (<strong>Liston<\/strong> by a mile)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When listening to <strong>Chuck<\/strong>, his respect for both men was bombastic. <strong>Chuck<\/strong> repeated numerous times how fond of <strong>Ali<\/strong> he is and how they were never mad at each other. It was always for show. He said he and <strong>Andre<\/strong> went to dinner to &#8220;discuss&#8221; the match. It was <strong>Chuck&#8217;s idea<\/strong> to be thrown out of the ring; <strong>Andre&#8217;s suggestion<\/strong> to end the fight was more brutal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The conversation led to <strong>WrestleMania 13<\/strong>, where <strong>Chuck<\/strong> served as a ringside judge, his friendship with <strong>Vince McMahon<\/strong> and many of the <strong>WWF<\/strong> wrestlers; the coolest was his many talks with <strong>Jimmy &#8220;Superfly&#8221; Snooka<\/strong> (my wife&#8217;s favorite back in the day).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While we ate at an Opera Themed restaurant, he told us of a <strong>Soprano<\/strong> he knew well&#8230; <strong>Jimmy Gandolfini<\/strong> and the rest of his crew.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We knew it was\u00a0<strong>Chuck&#8217;s birthday<\/strong>, so we got him a cake and had the staff Opera-sing Happy Birthday to him.<\/p>\n<p>By now, we&#8217;re into our fourth of six hours at dinner. We began sharing &#8220;gig&#8221; stories, trying to make the other laugh more. It was close but I think I had him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Now, this was my invite and I desperately wanted to show my deep pockets. While my wife was talking with <strong>Linda, Chuck&#8217;s wife<\/strong>, I was in the men&#8217;s room when <strong>Chuck<\/strong> decided to tell the manager he was to get the check&#8230; no matter what. When I heard this I walked to our table and told <strong>Chuck<\/strong> we had to go outside to settle the check. He suggested I &#8220;get a ladder first&#8221;. Sound familiar?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After dinner we went upstairs to the loft area where <strong>Chuck<\/strong> bought more wine, shared more stories including his time being detained for twenty months or so. I was riveted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0We&#8217;ve spoke about his lawsuit with <strong>Sly<\/strong> &#8211; &#8220;it was just business&#8221;.\u00a0 <strong>Chuck<\/strong> has Titanic respect for <strong>Sly<\/strong>, and truly loves him, he has from day one. He said without <strong>Ali\/Rocky<\/strong> he&#8217;d be a different person. It was a gift that fate called on him the way it did.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0He&#8217;s in pre-production with <strong>Hollywood<\/strong> for his life&#8217;s story &#8211; <em><strong>THE BLEEDER<\/strong><\/em>, <strong>Lev Schrieber<\/strong> playing <strong>Chuck<\/strong>. He thought I might make a good <strong>Stallone<\/strong>, purchasing a ticket to the fight, showing that moment when <strong>Rocky<\/strong> was born in <strong>Sly&#8217;s<\/strong> eyes. He said he&#8217;d tell the producer. What could I say to something like that?
