It ranks high on nearly every list of \u201cThe Worst Sequels Ever Made.\u201d\u00a0<strong>Entertainment Weekly even gave it the #1 spot<\/strong>, above\u00a0<em>Batman &amp; Robin<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Staying Alive<\/em>\u00a0isn\u2019t as bad as we all remember. It\u2019s not a classic, and it certainly lacks the cohesion, cool and barely post-pubescent passion of\u00a0<em>Saturday Night Fever<\/em>, but it\u2019s a surprisingly soulful examination of young manhood, told from the perspective of a filmmaker who, like Tony Manero, struggled en route to stardom in the heart of New York City.\u00a0<em>Staying Alive<\/em>\u00a0feels like a highly personal film and, like most personal films, it\u2019s a jumble of hit-or-miss ideas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8230;it\u2019s easy to grow fond of Sylvester Stallone\u2019s attempt to turn a\u00a0<em>Saturday Night Fever<\/em>\u00a0sequel \u2013 a doomed proposition if ever there was one \u2013 into something personal and heartfelt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Does\u00a0<em>Staying Alive<\/em>\u00a0pass\u00a0<strong>The Test of Time<\/strong>? Better than you\u2019d think. It\u2019s a misfire, but at least it grazed the target. It\u2019s nowhere near the quality of\u00a0<em>The Godfather Part II<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>Spider-Man 2<\/em>\u00a0or any other sequel that arguably surpassed the original, but it continues the emotional arc of the hero and it doesn&#8217;t just regurgitate the first film\u2019s plot. It doesn\u2019t feel like a soulless studio cash-in. In that respect,\u00a0<em>Staying Alive<\/em>\u00a0is at least a hell of a lot better than\u00a0<em>The Hangover Part II\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0<em>Home Alone 2: Lost in New York<\/em>. No,\u00a0<em>Staying Alive<\/em>\u00a0is\u00a0not the worst sequel ever made.
