Jim Peterik<\/strong> of Survivor<\/strong>, recently spoke to Dan Weiss<\/strong><\/a> about his career and working with Sly<\/strong> to create Eye of the Tiger<\/strong><\/em>. \u00a0 Here’s a taste…<\/p>\n Were you a big fan of the prior Rocky<\/em>\u00a0movies or boxing before Stallone approached you?<\/strong><\/p>\n Huge fan of Rocky<\/em>\u00a0I, and II<\/em>\u00a0was good, too, my wife and I were really into it. So when I got home that fateful day in early 1982, I had a message on my answering machine that went: \u201cJim, nice answering machine you got there, give me a call, it\u2019s Sylvester Stallone.\u201d So I thought, yeah, right, c\u2019mon. Stallone would have a handler or an agent\u2026it\u2019s not every day you get a message from Stallone. So I thought somebody was pranking me. I called my buddy Sal who did an imitation of him: \u201cCome on, don\u2019t do this to me.\u201d He\u2019s like \u201cDo what?\u201d So I called him back and Stallone answers, \u201cYo.\u201d And I said, \u201cIs this Sylvester Stallone?\u201d And he goes [affects Stallone voice<\/em>], \u201cYeah, call me Sly.\u201d So I go, \u201cHi Sly, how you doing?\u201d And he goes, \u201cYeah, I like the sound of your band. I want that sound for my new movie, can you help me out?\u201d And I said, \u201cIs the pope Catholic?\u201d I knew this was the chance of a lifetime.<\/p>\n He sent us a rough cut of the movie, the first three and a half minutes of a montage. So me and [Survivor guitarist] Frankie Sullivan just watch this thing, and he\u2019s got a Les Paul and starts playing the \u201cchugga, chugga, chugga\u201d thing. I see the punches, you know, Mr. T knocking the daylights out of Stallone, and I go \u201cbom\u2026bom bom bom.\u201d Literally syncing the guitar part to the punches we see onscreen. So we had a really good start, and then we begged Stallone to send us the whole movie, which he finally did the next day. Begrudgingly, because he wasn\u2019t supposed to. But that\u2019s when everything took shape, because that\u2019s when we see Burgess Meredith\u2018s character going \u201cRoc, you\u2019re losing the eye of the tiger!\u201d And we go, \u201cThere\u2019s our song.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n The Peterik<\/strong> interview is a good one. \u00a0His first hit was Vehicle\u00a0<\/strong><\/em> which he wrote for Ides of March<\/strong>. \u00a0The song appears in Sly’s<\/strong> movie Lock Up<\/strong><\/em>. \u00a0 Check out the full interview here<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n
