Wasn't that the coolest? If you don't think so,
then you probably didn't like it at all.
You see, it seems that people are in basically two groups
in regard to this ad [and those like it that use
deceased celebrities to promote products].
Those that like it, say that it helps to keep
the memory of the celebrity alive and introduces
him/her to a new generation.
Those that dislike ads like this claim that it cheapens
the memory of the star, and that the celebrity may
end up endorsing a product that they never used or even
liked while they were alive.
I tend to like these ads [and think the Gene Kelly
one is especially cool]. I look at it like this:
In order for the celeb's likeness to be used, the
advertiser had to get the permission of whoever the
deceased celeb left in charge. These caretakers
of the celeb's likeness should have a better idea
of what the celeb would approve of than those complaining.
Most viewers are intelligent enough to know that
it's not really Gene Kelly pop lock dancing, or John
Wayne drinking a cold one after coaching a football
game or Fred Astaire dancing with a vacuum cleaner.
And most of the time the ads are just plain cool.
