David Haye Trains Like Rocky

David Haye who fights Wladimir Klitschko next month in a world title unification bout is not only a Rocky Balboa fan, but has also been training like Rocky.  Haye told The Sun

  • “Since I was a kid I’ve always been a fan of the Rocky movies and spent a lot of time – probably too much time – watching them all!
  • “I love the Rocky storyline of the underdog going in and beating up the big Russian Ivan Drago.
  • “It’s a cliche, I know, but the sight of Rocky Balboa training by running up those steps in Philadelphia with his little dog and punching meat in the ice box really did act as one of my inspirations to start boxing.”

  • Sung Kang, of Fast Five, has been cast in a supporting role in the production, which is set to begin filming in Louisiana later in June.
  • Silver… produced the Stallone movies Demolition Man and Assassins, said, “Sylvester Stallone is an iconic action star the world over and I’m thrilled to be working with him again. I look forward to joining with IM Global and After Dark in bringing this exciting new story to the screen.”

“Rocky” Musical Moves Forward

On June 1, 2011, Patrick Healy, in the New York Times, wrote a piece titled, “Gonna Fly Soon: A ‘Rocky’ Musical is Moving Forward.”   Here are a few tidbits:

  •  The creators and producers, which include “Rocky” star and screenwriter Sylvester Stallone, held a private reading of the work in New York in April, according to Mr. Meehan and a member of the producing team, Barbara Darwall.
  • … they described the reading as creatively successful and said work was continuing toward the goal of mounting the musical in Germany in the fall of 2012 — and then, they hope, bringing “Rocky” to Broadway in the spring of 2013.
  • The project began about eight years ago, Mr. Meehan said, when Mr. Stallone called him about making a musical of “Rocky.” Mr. Stallone holds the rights to the story, Mr. Meehan and Ms. Darwall said.
  • He [Mr. Meehan] described the show as a small-orchestra, small-cast production, with about five principal characters and a plot that tracked closely to the first “Rocky” movie. He added that Mr. Stallone was an artistic partner and producer, not a potential cast member.
