James Byron Huggins and HUNTER are Back!

James Byron Huggins is back!

Long-time readers probably remember Huggins best as the author of Hunter.  Huggins wrote Hunter specifically with Sylvester Stallone (who bought the movie rights) in mind as the book’s hero.  Hunter is one of my all-time favorite novels and would make an exciting movie!  Stallone fans continue to hope that Sly will helm a movie version of Hunter even if he doesn’t star in it (and he should!).

When Stallone fans write me about movies that they’d like to see Sly do, Hunter is always on the list.  With Huggins and WildBlue Press re-issuing Hunter, perhaps now is the time for Sly to also revisit the idea of starring and/or directing a Hunter film!

Huggins wasn’t a one-hit wonder.  He also wrote The Reckoning, Cain, Leviathon, Rora, and other novels.  (And I recommend each of them!)  Huggins’ novels are a combination of thriller, action-adventure and horror.  His skill at seamlessly combining the genres made Huggins an international best-selling novelist.  When two of his books were optioned for over a million dollars a piece, Huggins turned his attention to work on films.

But now James Byron Huggins is back!

International and New York Times bestselling thriller author James Byron Huggins is back with a vengeance. The former police detective-turned successful author has signed with Denver based WildBlue Press to release two new novels and four backlisted titles. The backlisted books will begin release in April, starting with the thriller The Reckoning.  More backlisted titles will release in 2018, including The Hunter, a sci-fi/thriller with film rights owned by Sylvester Stallone. Dark Visions, a brand-new thriller from Huggins will release in July 2018. In the novel, Joe Mac, a legendary homicide detective forced into retirement when he lost his eyesight in the line of duty, is compelled to find whomever or whatever killed his grandson. Even if it costs him his life.

“I am both honored and privileged to put out the books I’ve been working on for so long,” Huggins said.  “I wouldn’t go with any other company. WildBlue will always be my company. They are solid. The best there is.”

Dark Visions will release July 31, 2018.

I am excited to revisit Hunter and The Reckoning.  It will be great to have the new Huggins’ novel, Dark Visions in July.  Now if Sly will add Hunter to his “Films to Do” List…

Sly to Write, Direct & Star in Hunter!

Bloody Disgusting has reported that

  • Stallone and Lionsgate have inked up a deal to fast track Hunter for 2014 release date. Stallone is set to star, write and direct, which will be filmed in 3-D.

I really hope this pans out. Hunter was written by James Byron Huggins specifically with Sly in mind. It’s an awesome book that will translate into a very cool movie.

  • A beast is loose somewhere north of the Arctic Circle. It has already decimated a secret research facility and annihilated a squad of elite military guards. And the raging creature is headed south toward civilization, ready to wreak bloody devastation. It is a job Hunter cannot turn down, but he soon discovers that his prey is terror incarnate, a half-human abomination created by a renegade agency through a series of outlawed genetic experiments. It has man’s cunning, a predator’s savageness, and a prehistoric power that has transcended the ages.”

Let’s hope everything lines up and Hunter gets made with Stallone at the helm. – Craig

Another Rambo and/or Another Rambo?

The image above is of a poster that is showing up around the Cannes Film Festival.  The back of the poster has the words Coming 2011.  So it would seem that earlier reports that Sly had decided not to return for another Rambo were wrong.  But were they?  Not according to this report from Harry at Ain’t It Cool NewsHarry says…

… Stallone told me in no uncertain terms – At the end of JOHN RAMBO – when he sees his home, those horses and he looks back at that road… for Sly, that was a road he is never walking down again.

Truthfully, I liked the idea of Rambo going into Mexico to rescue some kidnapped girls. Of course I also thought that the ending to Rambo was a perfect capper to the series. If Sly asked for my advice, I’d say, you can’t top perfection. Rambo has come full circle. Let’s end the series and do Hunter and another Expendables. After that, let’s see what else is out there. Perhaps Poe?

Before we leave the topic of another Rambo.  There could be another Rambo with another Rambo.  “Huh,” you say?  It has been floated that perhaps the series will return with someone else playing the character.  I do think that Rambo would be viable as an on-going series and different actors could step into the role… if enough time passes between Sly stepping down and the new person stepping up.  RIght now, I think it would be too soon.

Ethelmae Adds to the News

This past week we’ve seen some updates on Ethelmae’s blog [publicist on “The Expendables”].  Here are a few tidbits:

Honestly folks I have to admit I wasn’t that jazzed about Sly doing Rambo … But that all changed after my oh so interesting conversation with Sly on Saturday about the new Rambo.   I told him how happy I was after reading Zablo’s blog in which Sly said that he had changed the storyline.

I told Sly that I was excited about him tackling the subject of the brutality women and children caught in the drug wars in Mexico face.  He spoke passionately about shining the high beams on the situation.

He commented it will be a brutal shoot…

It will have all of the trademarks of a Stallone film and the story will be provocative, revealing and totally kick ass.

So now I’m clear – this Rambo will be Rambo and Hunter will be made in the future as a stand alone as it should be.
