Ranking All “Rocky” / “Creed” Movies

Sam Stone at CBR.com recently posted Every Rocky Movie Ranked. Stone did this by averaging the professional critics’ scores from Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic.

Joe Leydon at Variety had the same idea so All Eight Rocky Movies Ranked were done by Joe.

Not to be outdone, John Orquiola at ScreenRant provided All 8 Rocky & Creed Movies Ranked.

Follow the links above to see the individual comments and rankings for each of the Rocky/Creed films.   I created a chart to make comparisons easier.  I also added my rankings in the last column.

It was interesting to see that except for Rocky at #1 and Creed as #2 there wasn’t a majority consensus for any other ranking.

5 Leroy Neiman Rocky Paintings and a Mystery!

Leroy Neiman, the world famous sports artist, made cameo appearances in Rocky 3, 4, 5 and Rocky Balboa. Neiman’s art could also be seen in several of the Rocky movies.   The most famous Neiman Rocky art is the painting shown above.  You’ll see copies hanging in many sports bars and man caves throughout the world.  I have one of the original release prints that my wife surprised me with when I was in college way back when the piece was first released.

The painting above is the second most known Neiman Rocky painting.  It appeared at the very end of Rocky III.  To the best of my knowledge it was never released as an official Neiman print although there are many knock-offs and other artist copies out there.

Neiman created the painting above for Rocky V.  My understanding is it was released as a limited edition print for a fundraiser.  The print above was signed by Tommy Morrison.

The Neiman watercolor study above was offered up for auction and hopefully won by a Stallone fan.

And now for the mystery.  The very bad image above is of a Neiman Rocky piece that sharp-eyed fans spotted during a vintage Barbara Walters interview with Sly Stallone.  The art was/is in Sly Stallone’s personal collection.  Here’s the mystery — was the piece ever released as a print or shown anywhere else?  Are there any good copies of it around?  If anyone knows, please forward the information and I’ll be sure to share it.

Rocky Fans Shares His Collection!

SZer, BalboaRules sent in the following message with the photos shown.

Craig, a few years ago, I sent you some pictures of my Rocky collection, now in a new house, and just made some major changes to the line up.. what do you think?

I think that is one fine, well-displayed collection!  To get a better look, click on the photos! – Craig

Gotta love the Italian Stallion robe and all of the action figures!

The display cases are a nice touch.

Not many fans have movie prop clothes…

And here we see two!

I really like the fight advertisements for Rocky vs Apollo and Rocky vs Drago!

Even Rocky V gets props from this fan.  Well played.  Speaking of Rocky V, I always really liked the first Rocky V teaser poster.

And who doesn’t love the Rocky Brisk Ice Tea ads?

What a great collection and display room.  Thanks for sharing. – Craig

Reel Champions: The Post Doles Out its All-Time Sports Oscars

On February 21, 2015, The New York Post published  Reel champions: The Post doles out its all-time Sports Oscars by Brian Lewis.

Sly won a couple of awards…

Best picture

“Rocky”

The ultimate underdog “Rocky” pulled off the upset against sports movie heavyweights “Hoosiers” and “Raging Bull.” Sylvester Stallone got the inspiration for the screenplay after watching the heavyweight title fight between Bayonne’s Chuck Wepner and reigning champ Muhammad Ali, and insisted he play the lead. Good call.

Stallone, who trained with Jimmy Gambina every day for about five months before shooting, became a star, and the film won the Academy Award for Best Picture, ranked 57th on the American Film Institute’s 100 Years … 100 Movies — 10th Anniversary Edition.

Stallone got sued by Wepner for a share of the profits and settled in 2006. For the movie that gave us the most-used workout music in history — “Gonna Fly Now” — the line “Yo, Adrian!” and five sequels, it’s the least he could do.

Nominees: “Hoosiers,” “Raging Bull,” “Field of Dreams,” “The Natural,” “Remember the Titans,” “The Fighter,” “Requiem for a Heavyweight,” “Million Dollar Baby” and “The Hustler.”

Best hero

Rocky Balboa

Seriously, what other movie hero actually has his own statue? Sylvester Stallone donated a life-size statue of Rocky Balboa to the city of Philadelphia, and it still sits near the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where the titular character ran during his iconic training scene. The character starred in five more sequels, fought villains like Ivan Drago and Mr. T, gave us lines like “Yo, Adrian!” Oh, and Balboa was ranked seventh on AFI’s 100 Heroes and Villains list.

Nominees: Roy Hobbs in “The Natural,” Crash Davis in “Bull Durham,” Terry Malloy in “On The Waterfront,” Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger in “Rudy,” Dottie Hinson in “A League of Their Own,” Daniel-san/Mr. Miyagi in “The Karate Kid,” Paul Douglas in “Angels in the Outfield,” Norman Dale in “Hoosiers.”
