Rambo Franchise Trivia!

Sam Hutchinson at ScreenRant posted Rambo: 10 Things Fans Never Knew About The Franchise.  My guess is most readers here will know most of these facts.  Here are my three favorites with my thoughts.

The Only Rambo To Receive An Oscar Nomination.
(Rambo: First Blood Part II was nominated for Best Effects, Sound Effects Editing.  That’s right, Rambo is an Oscar-nominated film franchise.  – Craig)

Rambo Was Banned In Myanmar.
(Rambo was set in Burma / Myanmar and due to the spotlight the movie brought to the treatment of many in the country, the film was banned. Hopefully some reforms came about due in at least a small part to Rambo. – Craig)

Broken Nose.
(Sly accidentally broke Alf Humphrey’s nose during First Blood filming, which is why his character is seen wearing a bandaid after Rambo’s jailhouse escape. – Craig)

How About Behind-the-Scenes Facts from the “Rambo” Movies?

Ben Sherlock, at ScreenRant, posted They Drew First Blood: 10 Behind-The-Scenes Facts About The Rambo Movies.   Before you click over, here are three of my favorite facts and my comments on each…

The Fifth Movie Had A Ton Of Unused Scripts.
…A script called Rambo 5: Savage Hunt was a horror movie in which Rambo led a Special Forces team into the Arctic Circle to track down a flesh-eating mutant creature.

…Another script called Rambo 5: Last Stand pitted Rambo against a band of meth dealers who were terrorizing a small town. There were also a few drafts about Rambo saving a kidnapped girl from a Mexican cartel before the final script was written.

(The Rambo 5: Savage Hunt script was based on James Byron Huggins’ Hunter novel.  While this would have made an interesting Rambo movie, it might have been too much of a genre change.  I hope that someday Sly will turn Hunter into the film it deserves.  Rambo 5: Last Stand sounds a lot like Arnold’s Last Stand movie. – Craig)

Dolph Lundgren Was Initially Cast As The Villain In First Blood Part II. The role of Russian Lieutenant Colonel Sergei Podovsky, the only villain in Rambo: First Blood Part II with any lines in English, was originally offered to Dolph Lundgren. Lundgren even accepted the part and signed a contract.

(I did not know this. – Craig)

…Burmese Freedom Fighters even adopted some dialogue from the movie to use as battle cries. In particular, they were known to say, “Live for nothing, or die for something.” When he heard about this, Sylvester Stallone said, “That, to me, is one of the proudest moments I’ve ever had in film.”

(And we thought people only quoted Rocky for inspiration!  – Craig)

Entertainment Weekly: Rambo Returns

The August 4, 2006 issue of Entertainment Weekly features a full page article by Mandi Bierly titled “Rambo Returns.” Here are some excerpts:

  • “… production on “Rambo IV” (final title to be determined) is finally expected to commence on Oct.1 in Thailand.”
  • “… finding Rambo a fresh foe was actually a serious problem…”
  • Sly jokes, “Politics have changed so much. Who do we fight? The Finns? You can’t do that. The Dutch?  Wooden shoes are not going to look cool.”
  • So how did Sly arrive at a solution? “I called Soldier of Fortune magazine and said, ‘What is the most
critical man-doing-inhumanity-to-man situation right now in the world? Where is it?'” The answer was Burma.
  • The “first draft” script was written by Sly “with Art Monterastelli (“The Hunted”)” and “finds Rambo living a monastic lifestyle in Bangkok
  • “When a group of volunteers bringing supplies into Burma disappears, a relative of one of the missing missionaries begs Rambo to find them. He heads off with a team of young guns…

“RAMBO IV”: CONFIRMED!

It’s official. Sylvester Stallone will return as John Rambo in “Rambo IV.”

Production is set to begin once filming on “Rocky Balboa” wraps. Although the script hasn’t yet been finalized, the story will have Rambo return to action when a young girl is kidnapped. Producer, Ben Nedivi of Millennium Films, said that “Rambo IV” will “recapture the rawness of “First Blood.”

The first three Rambo films grossed over $600 million worldwide.

Sly on EW’s Hit List

Sly made Entertainment Weekly‘s June 17, 2005 Hit List by Dalton Ross.

#9 SLY STALLONE TO START WORK ON RAMBO IV
“I have the headband, machine gun, and bow and arrow ready to go,” said Sly. “Now watch me
go bludgeon some NBC execs for canceling The Contender. Oh yeah, and lots of commies, too.”

And that was supposed to be funny? – Craig

Rambo Returning!

When Sly was interviewed by Larry King a couple of weeks ago, Sly announced
that he’d signed a deal for Rambo IV.

Sly even gave away a bit of the plot when he said that it would take place in the United States, that Rambo would have a wife and child that he would have to rescue, and the
movie would be more in the vein of “First Blood” and “Deliverance.”

The fact that Rambo is returning is now everywhere. Entertainment Weekly
posted THIS report. TV Guide posted an item HERE. You can also read Rambo IV

Sly Gets Maxim Exposure!

Ernest Jazzman Resendes sent in the following scan and quotes from the November 2004 issue of Maxim:

Has working on (The Contender) gotten you fired up to make Rocky 6?
Stallone: I’m always fired up to make another Rocky. It dawned on me a long time ago that I have this character who’s almost autobiographical, so his story can keep going. The character can go places where the actor is in his life. The movies almost become documentaries.

So where is Rocky now?
Stallone: Society says to people, “Step aside; age gracefully.” I’ve never thought there was anything graceful about aging. So I used what George Foreman did with his comeback fight a few years ago as a model. Everyone thought he was a joke, but he followed his own drum.

Since you’re still in fighting shape, will Rambo be back, too?
Stallone: There has been movement in that area, yes. Of course, it won’t be what you think – not the same Rambo with the headband. In keeping with some sort of believability, he would be passing the torch to a younger generation of high-tech combatants. We’re working on an interesting premise where Rambo is brought back from living on a ranch somewhere, and because of his skills in jungle warfare and survival, he’s asked to lead a young group in a search-and-rescue mission. They can’t believe this decrepit guy is a war hero, but when their technology fails, they see where Rambo excels.

Thanks to Jazz for the scan and quotes! Thanks also to Peter Panagiotou for the heads-up!- Craig

Robert Rodriguez to Helm “Rambo 4”?

On Monday, October 11, 2004, Moviehole.com posted that talks are underway for Robert Rodriguez reteam with his “Spy Kids 3D : Game-Over” co-star Sylvester Stallone on a proposed fourth “Rambo” film.

Rodriguez is apparently interested in directing and perhaps even writing “Rambo 4.” According to the source Sly also serve as producer and wants the film to be less of “Rambo 3” and more “First Blood” this time around.
