Entertainment Weekly: They’re Back, Baby!

The October 20, 2006 issue of Entertainment Weekly features and article titled, “They’re Back, Baby” by Tim Stack. Stack looks at six movie franchises that are set to return to the big screen: “Jurassic Park IV,” “Indiana Jones 4,” “Terminator 4,” “Live Free or Die Hard,” and “Rocky Balboa” / “Rambo IV.”

Here’s what’s said about Sly’s movies:

ROCKY BALBOA / RAMBO IV
Franchise Gross to Date: $488 million [Rocky] / $250 million [Rambo]

After failed attempts at establishing street cred [Cop Land, Get Carter], Stallone has fallen back on his two most iconic characters. Rocky Balboa [Dec. 22], the sixth entry, finds the now-widowed boxer returning to the ring despite being old enough to be his competitor’s grandfather. “I started writing it about three years ago,” Stallone told EW this summer. “The people at MGM at that time were not interested on any level.” Stallone’s persistence also paid off with the next Rambo adventure. That one is set to begin shooting in January in Thailand, a country which has seen its share of drama in recent months. Hanging out in a spot that just had a military coup? Rambo wouldn’t have it any other way.

Hennie Blaauw’s Rambo

Longtime SZONErHennie Blaauw checked in with the art above and this message:

Hi there! Hope you’re well. Congrats on an awesome job with the Rocky Blog!

I just finished a big animation project and I’ll have some free time soon, so I’m planning on animating a rambo clip / trailer or something. I figure, we might as well get the Rambo IV buzz going so long 🙂

So I’ve attatched my first rough concept drawing, let me know what you think. I’ll do an animation test soon and show you.

Cool man, keep doing what you’re doing! Hope you have enough energy for the Rambo Blog too….I think they’ll get you onto that one soon…hahahaha

Cheers

Hennie

Samuel Hiti and his Rambo Quotes of the Week!

Samuel Hiti is a 30-year-old artist, who made his graphic novel debut in New York with his Xeric Award-winning End Times/Tiempos Finales.”

One of the biggest buzz books of 2004, Mike Mignola, creator of the cult favorite “Hellboy,” said it was the best graphic novel of the year; and Samuel was nominated for “Best New Talent” for the 2005 Harvey Awards. Samuel has worked for major companies such as Nike, The New York Times, Disney, and adapted The 2004 Paramount/Dreamworks movie of “Lemony Snicke t- SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS” into comic book form for Nickelodeon magazine.

I discovered Samuel’s site while surfing the web. While enjoying Samuel‘s art, I also learned that he’s a Rambo fan. Samuel recently drew a scene from Rambo and had so much fun with it, that he now does a Rambo Quote of the Week. Samuel graciously agreed to me posting a couple of examples here on the SZ. Rambo: Pride and Scorn

The December 2, 2005, issue of Entertainment Weekly contains an article titled “Hollywood Pulls the Trigger” by Benjamin Svetkey which looks at how Hollywood deals with controversial subjects. Here’s what it says about Rambo:

Rambo: First Blood Part II [1985Stallone‘s veiny mercenary drew both pride and scorn as the ultimate representation of the Reagan-era global machismo.

Rambo Action Figures

My buddy, Randy Martin [who has the coolest art collection] gave me a heads-up on a couple of new Rambo action figures that would soon be available.

The first is actually Colonel Troutman from First Blood and the second is John Rambo. Although a bit pricey,
they would look cool in any Stallone fan’s collection.

You can see more about the figures HERE and HERE.

Mark Dambach just wrote in to say that they are now available for pre-order. Mark went HERE and Randy
said that he uses THIS PLACE.

Sly Talk and Rumors

Lately there’s been quite a bit of talk on the internet that Sly is working on bringing back Rocky and Rambo to the big screen. Of course SZoners have been hearing these rumors for years.

Still, the word is that Sly’s serious about bring back his cornerstone characters. Stallone promises fans a
Rambo IV
says one site. Stallone to bring back Rambo says another. While “Rambo Lives!” cries a third. Not to be out done another site [using the same info as the others] posts “Stallone Promises Rocky VI!”

As always, I’ll believe it when I see it. [And I hope to soon!] – Craig

“Rambo” Rumors

On September 16, 2004, ContactMusic.com reported that “Hollywood hunk SYLVESTER STALLONE is to reprise his role as JOHN RAMBO in a new movie which sees the Vietnam veteran become an eco-warrior.

The untitled third sequel to 1982’s FIRST BLOOD features Rambo punishing industrial corporations for polluting the environment.

The action film will be the 58-year-old’s first movie role since SPY KIDS 3-D: GAME OVER, which hit cinemas in 2003.”

[ Thanks, Alain the French Fan for the tip! – Craig]

And on September 18, 2004, Dark Horizons posted “Rambo IV: A rumored plotline is up at Stallone Zone” in reference to a message board thread.

Rambo is the Toughest!

Hey SZoners, here’s an e-mail I received…

Hello Mr. Zablo,
It’s been a while since I have E-mailed and I’m sure you don’t remember me but I wanted to let Stallone Zone fans know of this. I was at my local Wegmans and in the new issue of Men’s Journal with Mel Gibson on the cover it talks of the 25 toughest men. Although for some strange reason Mr. Stallone is not in there it does have a list of the toughest movie characters and #1 is Rambo. Just thought you and your readers would like to know. Thank you for your time and keep up the good work with the site.
Another Sly Fan,
Joe Petitto

Thanks Joe! – Craig Zablo
