“Victory” for “Rocky”
On April 17, 2009, The National Post listed their choices for the Top Ten Sports Movies of All Time. Any guesses who had two films make the list? That’s right, Sly. “Victory” came in at number 8 and “Rocky” was #1. Here’s what they had to say about each film:
8. Victory!
Pele and Sylvester Stallone in the same movie? Count me in, though what I mostly remember about this is trying to watch it on HBO with my father as his snoring pretty much drowned out everything that either men said.
1. Rocky
His whole life was a million to one shot. This movie was so good that they tried making it a million more times. I heard Stallone wrote nearly 100 drafts of the original Rocky script. There’s a reason it one best picture, I guess.

Another “Victory” Victory
The DailyRecord.co.uk reports that “Victory” has again been voted the all time best football [aka soccer] movie. Here’s what they had to say about the movie:
ESCAPE To Victory has been voted the best football movie of all time by film fans.
The star-studded World War II drama told the story of a team of allied prisoners of war forced to take on the German national squad in a showpiece propaganda match.
But they turn the tables by using the event to plot an escape bid.
The cast featured movie stars Michael Caine and Sylvester Stallone, alongside a host of football heroes, including Pele, Bobby Moore, Ossie Ardiles and Scotland’s own John Wark.
The 1981 movie topped a poll of more than 1000 members of DVD rental website LOVEFiLM.com to mark the cinema release today of Brian Clough biopic The Damned United.

“Victory” Honored
On Janauary 29, 2009, Mirror.co.uk listed their choices for the Five Best Football Movies of All Time. Victory was listed in the top spot. Here’s what they had to say:
Any football film starring Michael Caine, Sylvester Stallone, Bobby Moore, Osvaldo Ardiles and Pelé deserves to top this list. Escape To Victory is a classic football flick that sees our heroes getting one over on the Germans while playing some very attractive football. The plot may be wafer thin and some of the acting wooden, but it’s compelling viewing for any football fan.

“Victory” Gets the Top Spot

The June 17, 2006 issue of The Cleveland Plain Dealer contains some movie recommendations for soccer fans. Although made 25 years ago, “Victory” gets the top spot beating out “Shaolin Soccer”, “Bend It Like Beckham” and every other soccer movie ever made. “Victory”: John Huston‘s 1981 yarn about POWs going toe-to-toe with Nazis is one of the few soccer movies to come out of Hollywood. During filming, Sylvester Stallone fired his trainer, British goalie Gordon Banks. He thought goalkeeping was easy — until he dislocated a shoulder and broke two ribs trying to do it during filming. I’ve always been surprised that when I talk to folks who aren’t really big Sly fans, that almost all of them always mention how much they liked him in Victory.

I don’t know why, but this picture made me think how cool it would be to see a shot of Rocky after a tough fight, looking like he had been in a war, standing in front of a poster advertising the bout.
