Earlier this week The Washington Post ran a larger version of the photo above of Sly and Dolph “sparring” for the fans in Japan.

On September 30, 2010, Antonio Tarver, who is in training for his upcoming heavyweight fight in his run at the heavyweight title, was interviewed. As you could expect, there was a question about working with Sly and the filming of Rocky Balboa. Here’s how it went down…
That was such a great experience, I have to pinch myself even today, I just can’t believe I had that opportunity. When I look back as a young man growing up wanting to be a boxer, the Rocky movies where huge and had a big effect on me. Just to be considered for the part sent chills through my body. Still does today when I think about it. Sly was great to work with, he made me feel very comfortable. I take a lot of pride in making that movie. Sly trusted me to help direct the fight scenes. I had a lot of offers for other parts that I turn down because I still had boxing in my blood. Acting is something that I would like get more involved with after I retire from boxing.
Antonio Tarver is a class act. I had the good fortune to meet him years before winning the light-heavyweight championship, knocking out Roy Jones Jr. and the filming of Rocky Balboa. I also met him again when he was the champ as well as right after filming Rocky Balboa. Antonio Tarver was still the same humble, appreciative man. I wish him the best in his quest to win the heavyweight championship. Go Tarver!

Howard Stern has been a “shock jock” since, well, probably since the term “shock jock” was invented. Stern, best known for his outrageous show and hi-jinks, is sometimes over-looked as a probing interviewer. When celebs go on the Stern show, they [and Stern’s listeners] never know what to expect.
Now Howard Stern has put together “Howard Stern’s 25 Greatest Celebrity Guests” as a pay-per-view and On-Demand special. Of course Sly Stallone made the cut [otherwise why would we be talking about it on the SZ?], along with Arnold Schwarzenegger, William Shatner, Mr. T, James Caan, Farrah Fawcett, Gary Busey, and many others. You can learn more about the special here.

Dave Wachter joins us this week with his take on Sly from The Expendables. I’m a huge fan of Dave’s art and own several pieces [and hope to get more in the future]. He’s a tremendous artist, but more importantly an all-around decent guy. You can see more of Dave’s art at his site. – Craig

SZoner, Hideo wrote in to say that Sly is Japan to promote The Expendables. Hideo also sent a link to several photos of the event. So here they are…

It should be noted that after 36 days of release, The Expendables passed the $100 million mark in the US. Way to go, Sly and everyone involved! – Craig

That’s Ryan Cody’s take on Sly from Demolition Man. I’d been wanting to get a sketch from Ryan for a while now, but since he doesn’t make it to east coast shows and I don’t get west, it didn’t look good. Not long ago, Ryan was going to a show and offered fans some discounted sketch opportunities and even extended the offer to me through the mail.
I jumped on board for two pieces and the Demolition Man is the first. You’ll see the second in the coming weeks. Until then check out Ryan’s blog and his DA site.
Thanks to Ryan! Hopefully we can do it again sometime. – Craig
