Andrew Charipar: Nighthawks

This is the second piece of Stallone art that I’ve gotten from Andrew Charipar. You may remember the Cobra piece that he did at FX. A few months later, Andrew was sketching at the Florida SuperCon and so I hit him up for another piece.

Andrew worked up this very cool shot of Deke from “Nighthawks.” Love the design and how Andrew went back in with the colored pencil for highlights. When I picked up the piece Andrew said he already had an idea for his next Stallone drawing, and I can’t wait to see what it is. Until then we have Andrew’s blog and his DA site to hold us over.

Dick Giordano: “Demolition Man” 2

To comic book fans, Dick Giordano is a living legend. During his fifty plus years in the biz he’s done everything from ink all the greats (including himself) to serve as Editor-in-Chief of DC Comics, to co-founding his own comic company. Mr. Giordano also has a great sense of humor.

I recently had the good fortune to pick up six model sheet headsketches of Sly that Mr. Giodano did before starting work on DC Comics adaptation of “Demolition Man.” That’s the second posted above.

Matthew Warlick’s Jack Carter

Matthew Warlick is a studio mate of my buddy Evan Bryce Matthew is also freelance illustrator, art director and comic book artist based in Dallas, Texas.    Matthew contacted me to say that he’d been talking to Evan and wanted to work up a Stallone sketch for the SZ.  We exchanged a couple of e-mails and soon enough, Matthew sent in his very, very cool take on Jack Carter

How could it get any better than that, you ask?  And I’m glad you did because Matthew created a video of himself inking the piece.  I love the art and the video is the icing on the cake.  You can check it out here.  You can also see more of Matthew’s art at his website and artblog.

BIG THANKS to Matthew for sharing his talents and to Evan for talking up the SZ.  Hopefully we’ll see more from Matthew in the future!

Chris Moreno’s “Cop Land”

Chris Moreno worked up this very nice color take on Sly from “Cop Land” for me at a convention last year.  My buddy picked it up when I had to leave the show early and I didn’t end up getting it in my possession until just recently.  Man, I really like Chris’ art and my piece is an excellent example of “why.”  He’s a talented artist with a huge sense of humor.  What a great combination!  You can check out more of Chris’ art here.

Scotty Schumaker’s Rambo

This week’s piece is Sly as Rambo by Scotty Schumaker.  I’d been following Scotty’s work at his Deviant Art site for a while, so when he offered up sketch commissions, I had to jump on board.  Scotty was great through the whole process, keeping us all informed on where he was on his posted commission list.  He sent the art in a package that a tank couldn’t have destroyed.

Thanks to Scotty for a wonderful commission experience.

Evan Bryce: Expendables Art

I’m a big Evan Bryce fan.  I’ve been following his work for a few years now and we’ve become friends via the internet.

When I saw that Evan was going to be at this year’s Heroes Convention, I knew that I’d want to get a sketch from him to go with my other two.  We talked and Evan asked what character I wanted.  I told him it was his choice and handed him the reference photos.  I had high expectations for what Evan would come up with.  He exceeded them all.

Evan is an exciting artist and one to keep an eye on.  You can see more of his work at his blog or his Deviant Art site.  Plan to spend a while.
