Two Vintage INTERVIEW Interviews with Sly Stallone!

As I was going through the Zablo vault I came across the October 1994 issue of Interview magazine.  The photo header is NOT that cover.  Instead the picture above is of the September 1985 issue of Interview.  Let me explain.

As I was going through the vault, I found my copy of the October ’94 issue.  In it there is a new (for that time) interview with Sly Stallone.  But instead of a new photo, they reprinted the cover of the September ’85 issue. Well, as it turns out, you can read that interview here.  (By the way, I love the cover art of Sly,)

PS – The thing that really struck me about the interview below is the question about Sly always having a sense of mortality.  Even then Sly new that time was our greatest currency.

On July 16, 2010, Peace FM Online posted a piece about Sly and his long-time dream to make a movie about Edgar Allen Poe.  Here’s a taste:

“I do have a script that’s gone through 20 mutations. Every few years I take it out and rework it and update it. What fascinates me about Poe is that he was such an iconoclast.

It’s a story for every young man or woman who sees themselves as a bit outside the box, or has been ostracized during their life as an oddball or too eccentric. It didn’t work for him either.”

“His work was too hip for the room…”

Empire Talks to Sly

On October 1, 2009, Empire, posted “Stallone on Death Wish Remake plus Cliffhanger Remake and Poe Biopic”.  Here’s a bit of what Sly had to say:

  • On a “Death Wish” remake:  “I’m thinking about it… It’s a classic morality tale, where you take a civilised man and take away everything that matters to him so he becomes primitive again.”
  • On “Poe”:  “I keep telling my producer Avi Lerner, ‘Make Edgar Allan Poe!’ He says, ‘Does he have a gun?’ ‘No, he doesn’t have a gun’, ‘Can he throw a knife?’ I say, ‘No, he writes poetry!’
  • Will Sly play Poe?:  “Of course, I’m not playing Poe. ‘Yo, Poe!’ It won’t work! It’ll be some young actor because he dies at 39, but it’s gonna happen.”
  • On a proposed “Cliffhanger” sequel: “I hear they’re gonna remake it… You know you’ve been around when they start to remake your own movies when you’re still alive.”

Rambo & Iron Man

That’s Robert Downey, Jr. and Sly from a Vanity Fair photo shoot.

On April 24, 2009, Downey was profiled at Metro International and asked after “Iron Man” and “Sherlock Holmes” what movies were in his future.  Downey hinted it could be Stallone’s “Poe” saying:

“Stallone wrote a great script that he wants to direct about Edgar Allen Poe.”

Sly’s “Poe” script has been percolating for years.  Some day it will get done and Robert Downey, Jr. would be perfect in the role.  For the full article, click here.

Sly Mini-Interview in Playboy!

The December 2006 issue of Playboy features a one page interview with Sly. Here are a couple of highlights:

Playboy: In your career, any lessons learned?

Stallone: Every performer has tremendous strengths and weaknesses, and if you feel the ride will be endless, you’re doomed.

Playboy: Are you really making a movie about Edgar Allan Poe?

Stallone: Yes. Poe is something I wrote in 1970, and it has gone through 15 face-lifts. Each of the 200 books on Poe I’ve read interprets him differently. So I’m putting my spin on him. To me, Poe represents the misunderstood artist in all of us.

One final quote from Sly: “If you want to do something that perhaps doesn’t conform to your age, you’re ridiculed. I knew when I said that I wanted to do this movie [“Rocky Balboa”] I would be fodder for a lot of jokes. But I think if you’re willing to take the humiliation and embarrassment, then you’re entitled to the opportunity.”
