In a profile [from Business Week Online for October 3, 2005] of David Pecker, chairman and CEO of American Media Inc., which publishes of The National Enquirer, The Star, Shape, and Sly [and other mags]; Pecker had this to say about working with celebs: “But ‘to tell you the truth, it hasn’t been fun” dealing with celebs, says Pecker. “Sly‘s been unbelievably aggressive” in his demands for his magazine.”
I find that quote absolutely refreshing. If you read the profile, you’ll see that magazines are in a battle to stay alive. Circulations are down. The fact that Sly is taking a REAL interest in giving his magazine personality and HIS distinct voice shows a genuine passion. Whether of not the mag goes past the initial 3 planned and published issues won’t be because Sly didn’t do his part.
Sly is going to be honored with a lifetime achivement award by the Taurus World Stunt Awards Foundation. Here’s part of the press release:
Sylvester Stallone, who rose to notoriety in 1976 when he was nominated for two Golden Globes and two Oscars (for Writing/ Screenplay and for Best Actor) of the now classic, “Rocky,” will receive the Taurus Lifetime Achievement Award for an Action Star.”Stallone has been a dynamic driving force in action films creating some extremely memorable characters and moments. The stunt community is excited to present him with this honorary award for his achievement as an action film star,” stated TWSA Executive Producer, Mitch Geller.
“On top of that, Stallone fully understands the difficulty and complexity of stunt work and through his films he has endowed the stunt community with a wealth of job opportunities.”

The Taurus World Stunt Awards is the only show completely devoted to recognizing these behind-the-scenes heroes and their death-defying work. Stuff.co.nz is running a weekly “Celebrity Fight Club.” The way it works is Stuff pairs up two celebs each week and asks readerswho they thinkwould win a fight. Readers are asked to consider factors such as age, height, ability, stamina, and general all-round toughness. Once a winner becomes clear in each poll, their names are updated and published in Stuff’s Entertainment section.
Here are the results of Stallone vs Schwarzenegger: With 513 votes, Sly Stallone easily terminated Arnie in this match-up. Perhaps becoming the Governor of California has softened Arnie up – he got only 299 votes.
Our POW [Picture of the Week] comes to us from my collection. This is a rare advertisement for First Bloodwhen the project was coming together. Yep, Kirk Douglas was set to play Colonel Trautman. The great Drew Struzan did the poster!
Whenever my buddies and I are talking movies and “dream casting” — and I mention Sly for a role, someone ALWAYS makes the comment that I’d recommend Stallone for ANY role.
Well, that’s just not true…
… even though there are many roles that I think he could do [or have done well].
Seems I’m not alone.
When Robert Rodriguez was asked
ina recent interviewwho he thought would make a good Batman if “The Dark Knight Returns” was
ever made into a movie he responded with…
“I love “Dark Knight Returns”…I think Stallone and Bruce Willis would make great Dark Knights if they
ever did make Frank’s version of the movie. It would take an iconic actor like that to play such an iconic character.”
Hey, if Robert Rodriguez says that Sly would make a great Batman, well, who am I to argue?
I received the pic above and the following e-mail from Klein: Sly’s motorcycle and Rocky stuff can be found at the Celebrity Hotel in downtown Deadwood, South Dakota. The bike has been there for some 14 years now.
You can also see:
